Lane Gibbs (PHS Class of 2021)
On October 18, Mrs. Springs’ food and nutrition class held its second annual cupcake war. As the name of this event suggests, students were asked to create cupcakes that were judged on a list of criteria.
An array of PHS faculty and students were on the panel of judges. This list includes: Ms. Wallach, Mr. Holcomb, Mrs. Kerber, Mr. Covino, and senior Casey Thornton.
Judges were asked to look for certain requirements while taste-testing. For example, they needed to determine if the cupcake was sweet, salty, sour, or spicy. In regards to texture, the cupcake must not be burnt, undercooked, too dense, or chewy. Rather, it should be light and fluffy. The decoration and design needed to be a balance of colors and not too over-the-top.
There was also a theme-inspired contest added to the event. Each contestant was asked to make his or her cupcake connected to their chosen theme. Presentation was also judged. According to Mrs. Spring, there should not have been any crumbs, smears, fingerprints, or drips on the plate.
The judges have already tasted the cupcakes, and the winner will be announced on October 24th at Monday morning meeting!
